With #1 Pick in hand, Stars Look for the Perfect Coach
The Stars season is over, but that hasn’t stopped the silver and black from making the news. The Stars received the #1 pick in the 2016 draft lottery, and talk about improvement has already ensued.
With the first overall pick, and a few high-profile players returning from injury, the San Antonio squad’s chances of making an impact in the 2017 season seem pretty high. Now, all that’s left to determine is who will coach these rising Stars.
After coaching the Stars since 2005, Coach Dan Hughes retired following the 2016 season. The question remains as to who will fill Hughes’ shoes going into what Stars fans hope will be an eventful season.
Assistant Coach Vickie Johnson’s name comes up automatically when considering possible replacements. Johnson has been a Stars coach since 2011. Before her coaching career, Johnson played in the WNBA for 12 seasons, three of which were with the stars. With her extensive association with the WNBA, Vickie Johnson seems the obvious choice as the Stars head coach.
Another name being mentioned as a possible Stars coach is University of San Francisco’s former head coach, Jennifer Azzi. Azzi, who has coached the USF Dons for the last 6 years, also played in the WNBA for 4 years with the Detroit Shock, Utah Starz, and stayed with the franchise after its move to San Antonio.
Others have mentioned Becky Hammon when discussing head coach options for the Stars. However, Hammon is currently serving on the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff.
Obviously the Stars and GM Ruth Riley have some good options for head coach. Whoever ends up in the head coaching position has a great team to lead and an exciting season ahead.
