Three Things To Watch: Stars vs. Sky

The San Antonio Stars visit the Chicago Sky in search of a win. The Stars (6-21) are currently last in the WNBA, while the Sky (14-13) are attempting to solidify playoff seeding, and sit fifth in the WNBA, Here are three things to watch.

  • Can the Stars play consistent defense all game?

For the Sky, Elena Delle Donne can impact the game in several ways, as she can score from anywhere on the floor. Delle Donne is currently averaging 21.6 points per game, which leads the WNBA. It will be important to limit her production by swarming her on the defensive end, which would ultimately force her teammates to make shots. Jayne Appel-Marinelli is one of the league’s best shot blockers statistically, so she will be looked upon to hold the paint down. On the other hand, despite her offensive capabilities, defensively is where Delle Donne can be exploited. It will be important to attack her early on, which could lead to foul trouble.

  • Can Moriah Jefferson continue her impressive play?

Jefferson is shooting 41.9 percent from behind the arch, which is fifth best in the league. Additionally, she averages 12.3 points and 4.1 assists per game. She will be matched up against Jamierra Faulker and Courtney Vandersloot, who rank fifth and sixth in assists per game. Jefferson also averages 1.4 steals per game, which is good for sixth in the league. Forcing turnovers would create easy scoring opportunities in transition, which also creates more offensive possessions for the Stars.

  • Will the bench be able to produce?

Earlier this season, Haley Peters scored a season-high 16 points off the bench, and also hit the game winning shot to defeat the Sky. The bench will be looked upon to add scoring, as it will take pressure off the starters. Unfortunately, the bench has not always been consistent, especially in recent games. If the bench is able to have a solid effort, the Stars will have a good shot at stealing another win against the Sky.
