Depleted Stars get burned by Sun in Connecticut

Highlights:

The San Antonio Stars got out to a quick start in Washington on Sunday, the same could not be said 48 hours later as the team wrapped up a two-game road trip.

Astou Ndour had 12 points, but the Stars fell 89-62 to the Connecticut Sun in front of 5,291 fans inside Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday night.

Both Moriah Jefferson and Monique Currie added 10 points each for San Antonio, who only dressed eight players for the game.

“It was tough because of their physicality and we had a hard time rebounding the basketball early in the game they dominated the glass,” Stars coach Dan Hughes said. “Give Connecticut credit, I thought they made plays and were able to play through Bentley and (Chiney) Ogwumike in a big way.”

Connecticut started the game strong, outscoring the Silver and Black 28-9 in the opening ten minutes.

The Sun were led by Alex Bentley’s 21 points. Alyssa Thomas and Chiney Ogwumike each poured in 16 for Connecticut (10-17), who moves a 1/2 game out of the final playoff berth with the victory.

“We are just focusing on winning and getting a playoff spot right now. We are taking it game by game and not trying to get too high or too low,” Bentley said.

Alex Montgomery did not play and Kayla Alexander was held out for San Antonio due to a concussion. Dearica Hamby was held out with the flew.

“It’s tough, we only had eight tonight, so its next man up, but you really can’t control that situation and you just have to keep fighting and keep pushing and hopefully we get some bodies back soon,” Jefferson said.

Up next: The Stars are now 6-20 on the season and will return to the court on Thursday when they welcome Candace Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks to the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
