Stars dazzled by Mystics in D.C.

The San Antonio Stars know they are getting closer as a team to figuring things out. Unfortunately, an early start in the nation’s capital was not one of those days.

Kayla Alexander scored 12 points as the Stars fell 84-67 to the Washington Mystics in front of 6,314 kids inside the Verizon Center on Camp Day.

Haley Peters was the lone other player in double figures for San Antonio with 10 points. The Silver and Black scored just seven points in the first quarter, their lowest of the season.

“I thought they got out of the gate well,” Stars coach Dan Hughes said. “I thought they shot the ball well. We were a step behind the whole first half. Second half, I thought we were much more in line with what we wanted to do, but the cushion of the first half was too much.”

The Mystics were led by both Emma Meesseman and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, who both scored 14 points. Ivory Latta added 12 for Washington (9-8), who went over .500 with the victory.

“We moved the ball. I think it was our season high in assists,” Washington coach Mike Thibault said. “Overall, defensively, we were pretty good particularly against the starters. I am not happy with what we did against their bench but we will take the win.

The fourth quarter was a better quarter for San Antonio as they outscored Washington 24-13.

Up next: The Stars are now 3-12 on the season and will return to the court on Friday when they face the Minnesota Lynx at 7 p.m. inside the Target Center.
