The San Antonio Stars and Los Angeles Sparks are both off to very slow starts to the 2015 season. San Antonio came in winless on the road, while the Sparks were looking for their first win of the season. Either way, a victory would be taken at the end of 40 minutes.

Dearica Hamby scored a career-high 19 points, but it was not enough. The Stars fell 86-81 to the Sparks in front of 4,344 fans inside the Staples Center on Thursday night.

Sophia Young-Malcolm added 18 points and Danielle Robinson finished with 12 points and 13 assists for San Antonio, who fell to 0-5 away from the Lone Star state.

“Tonight’s game went back-and-forth. Offensively, both teams were very efficient,” Stars head coach Dan Hughes said. “It was a good basketball game and Los Angeles made the plays that were the difference in the game.”

San Antonio led by 12 points in two different times in the game, but could not hold on. Los Angeles used a fourth quarter rally to grab the come from behind win.

Los Angeles was led by Nneka Ogwumike’s 27 points. Jantel Lavender added 21 points and Kristi Toliver chipped in 15 for the Sparks (1-7), who earned their first win of the season.

“It feels great, but it really feels great for the players,” Sparks head coach Brian Agler said. “They have been working so hard on the practice court. Things have not been going our way so far this season and to get this win today shows a lot about our character as a team; how we hang in together and focus on the things we can control.”

The Stars are now 2-8 on the season and will return to the court next week when they welcome the Sparks to Freeman Coliseum for a rematch at 7 p.m
