The San Antonio Stars begin their 2015 season against the Phoenix Mercury in Phoenix Arizona, and one player to watch is rookie forward Dearica Hamby.

The rookie out of Wake Forest averaged 9.9 points per game and 7.5 rebounds during the preseason, where the Stars finished 0-2. She was within the top 3 scorers in both of the games behind veteran guard Jia Perkins and center Kayla Alexander.

Hamby has a lot to offer the Stars who haven’t ranked higher than the third seed since 2008 when they finished first and won the Western Conference. In her senior year at Wake Forest, Hamby averaged 20.3 points and 10.7 rebounds which helped her become the first player out of the school’s history to be selected in the WNBA draft.

This isn’t the first time Wake Forest has made an impact on San Antonio Sports. Spurs star forward Tim Duncan graduated from the school in 1997, the same year he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the first pick in the NBA draft.

Though it’s still early to tell, the impressive stats from Dearica Hamby seem to suggest that she’ll have a similar positive impact on San Antonio’s WNBA squad as her fellow Wake Forest alumnus did for the Spurs.

We’ll find out what kind of impact Hamby will make this Friday when the Stars take on the defending champion Phoenix Mercury at 9 p.m. inside the U.S. Airways Center.
