Stars select Stankovic, Moody in third round of draft

The San Antonio Stars made their final selections in the third and final round of the WNBA Draft on Thursday night. The silver and black selected Dragana Stankovic with the 30th overall pick, and Nikki Moody with the 33rd overall selection.

Stankovic is a 6-5 center from Serbia and currently plays in Hungary with UE Sopron. She averages 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds so far in overseas action. Another reason she was so high on the Stars radar is she has played with current Star Kayla McBride this past offseason.

Moody is a 5-8 guard from Iowa University. She averaged a career best 14.1 points, 6.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game last season with the Cyclones. Throughout her college career, Moody averaged 11.3 points, 6.0 assists and 3.8 rebounds.

“We wanted to invite another point guard,” Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes said. “We wanted to have some answers as to the backup with D-Rob. We didn’t have a second round pick, so we went to the third round looking to give someone a chance. Nikki Mody has been someone I’ve watched for years.”

Listen below to see what Hughes told me right after the WNBA Draft about the night and his excitement for the upcoming season.

The Stars will open the 2015 season on June 5 against the defending champion Phoenix Mercury before hosting the Tulsa Shock for their home opener on June 14 at Freeman Coliseum.
