The San Antonio Stars made a solid move for the future and selected Dearica Hamby from Wake Forest University with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft on Thursday night.

“As talented and athletic as she is.. she is hard working,” Stars general manager and head coach Dan Hughes said.

Hamby averaged 14.2 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game in her time at Wake Forest. In her senior season, she averaged 20.3 points and 10.7 rebounds as she was a Wade Trophy Finalist. She is the first ever player from Wake Forest University to be selected in the WNBA Draft.

“I’m so excited,” said Hamby. “I am ready to learn, ready to work and ready to play for the Stars. I am going to bring everything I have to the team.”

The 22-year-old in was second in rebounding and tenth in field goal percentage. In her junior season she led the ACC in both scoring and rebounding, becoming the first Demon Deacon to lead the ACC in both categories in the same season.

Hamby finished her career at Wake Forest as all-time leading scorer and rebounder. There is no doubt she will be a great addition for the Stars and will look good in silver and black.

Listen below to Coach Hughes discuss the trade for Alex Montgomery and the overall draft night. The Stars welcomed Hamby and Montgomery in the first round. In the third round the silver and black picked up Dragana Stankovic from Serbia and point guard Nikki Moody formerly of Kansas.

The Stars will open the 2015 season on June 5 against the defending champion Phoenix Mercury before hosting the Tulsa Shock for their home opener on June 14 at Freeman Coliseum.
