She may be a rookie, but Kayla McBride can hit clutch shots when the San Antonio Stars need them.
McBride’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining lifted the Stars to a 71-70 come from behind win over the Indiana Fever in front of 8,531 fans inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Indiana led by 13 points halfway through the fourth quarter, but then the Stars’ rallied. San Antonio went on a 12-0 to take a 67-65 lead with less than a minute to go. Briann January would end the scoreless drought for the Fever when she hit a 3-pointer to give Indiana the 70-68 lead with 6.8 seconds to go.
McBride answered from the left wing just seconds later to stun the Fever crowd.
”We were just trying to create some motion and I was there to shoot it,” said McBride, who finished with a team-high 14 points. ”Our defense was what did it for us. We were down with four minutes to go and just got stop after stop.”
Shavonte Zellous led Indiana (8-10) with 16 points and Tamika Catchings made her season debut as she finished with six points on 1-of-7 shooting.
”When we look at what kind of team we want to have down the stretch, we want to win a championship,” Catchings said. ”Every game we have to look at what we did and continue to get better.”
Indiana committed 14 turnovers and suffered their fourth straight home defeat, something Fever head coach Lin Dunn is not happy with.
”Bad decisions,” Dunn said. ”We’re not doing a good enough job in crunch time of taking care of the basketball. We’re still learning the hard way.”
The Stars are now 10-9 on the season and will return to the court on Wednesday night when they welcome Cappie Pondexter and the New York Liberty to the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
